Relocating to Homestead Made Easy

Your brand new home at Homestead is ready, everything is lined up and you’re thrilled to move into your dream home – but packing up all of your belongings and getting them to the new place can put a bit of a damper on an otherwise exciting situation. Even if you’re relocating for a new job, or are a military family going through a permanent change of station, it doesn’t have to be difficult or stressful. Just keep these tips and tricks in mind, and your next move will be a breeze, so you can enjoy your new home that much sooner.

Pack Carefully

Especially if you’re relocating from out of state, you want to make sure everything is secure. Use strong boxes and packing tape. Towels, blankets and sheets make great alternatives to bubble wrap and paper. And when you’re packing the van, think about the order of boxes. Don’t stack heavy items on top of fragile boxes, and consider putting the non-essential items like bulky clothing and books on the van first, so when it’s time to unload all of your most needed items get off the truck right away.

The Essentials

It’s always a good idea to pack an “essentials” box. Think things like scissors, cleaning supplies, disposable plates and utensils, and handwashing soap. Keep this box with you so it doesn’t get lost in the void of the moving truck. This way, you’re ready and prepared for the moment you get in your new home.

Road Trip

If you’re making a longer move, don’t dread the drive. Instead, think of it more like a road trip, and have fun with it! Pack special snacks and entertainment for the kids. You can even look along your route for any exciting roadside attractions or unique restaurants to visit along the way.

Furry Friends

Traveling with pets can add a whole new layer to the moving process, but there are a few things you can do beforehand to make things easier. For small animals like cats, puppies and rabbits, make sure to get them used to their travel kennel ahead of time. For larger animals like dogs, make sure they’re comfortable traveling in the car. And if you have a particularly anxious pet, consider discussing travel options with your vet.

Settle In

Don’t let the boxes sit around for ages. The sooner you unpack, the faster it’ll feel like home and the sooner you can start exploring your new neighborhood. At Homestead, our Lifestyle Director even helps new residents get to know their neighbors and makes the transition to a new place easier.
